Fontaine Modification has expanded its sit-down dual-drive steering conversion for the Peterbilt Model 220 cab-over-engine (COE) truck. The company, which has offered left-hand steering additions to right-hand-drive trucks since 2015, now provides the reverse modification — adding right-hand steering to left-hand-drive models.
Enhanced Flexibility for Municipal and Service Fleets
The sit-down dual-drive conversion allows operation from either the traditional left seat or the curbside right seat, improving flexibility for fleets that perform tasks such as refuse collection, street sweeping, paint striping, and pavement maintenance.
The system enables drivers to select the most effective driving position for the task at hand. Right-hand operation offers better curb visibility during worksite operations, while left-hand driving is preferred for traveling in traffic. Drivers can switch between sides with the flip of a switch, and both stations feature identical controls for a consistent driving experience.

The Peterbilt Model 220 equipped with Fontaine’s sit-down dual-drive modification provides flexibility for municipal and vocational fleets operating in both urban and worksite environments.

Improved Ergonomics and Driver Productivity
“With Fontaine’s sit-down dual-drive modification, drivers get the best of both worlds, as they can transition smoothly from one side of the cab to the other as needed throughout the day,” said Jamil Young, president of Fontaine Modification. “The right-side driving position is engineered to mirror the left-side ergonomics, improving comfort and productivity.”
OEM Integration and Service Support
The conversions are performed at Fontaine’s modification center in Garland, Texas, using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components whenever possible. This approach helps ensure that trucks can be serviced at the customer’s local Peterbilt dealership.
