The General Services Administration (GSA) began a car-sharing progam with Enterprise CarShare in limited cities on Oct. 2. The pilot program runs in Washington D.C., New York City, Boston, and Chicago. The initial one-year program will provide government agencies and their employees the opportunity to access car-sharing services 24/7 in these four cities.

The GSA manages one of the largest federal fleets in the U.S. government. Through car sharing, GSA hopes to reduce the size of its fleet over time. Agencies will pay for the time their employees use the vehicles. 

“Car-sharing initiatives help federal agencies reduce costs, improve service, and optimize their use of vehicles,” said Bryan Scott, who coordinates with federal offices and government agencies for Enterprise Holdings. “Through this program, government agencies can test-drive car sharing in the coming months to experience how it meets their transportation needs.” 

In 2008, Enterprise began offering car sharing in collaboration with local governments under the name WeCar by Enterprise. Public fleets using WeCar include the City of Loveland, Colo., and various military bases.
