E-One Inc. is recalling 112 2013-2014 model-year Emergency One Typhoon, Cyclone II and Quest firefighting chassis because of the potential for electrical system problems, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

The chassis were all manufactured from March 19, 2013, through April 15, 2014, and are equipped with vehicle input module (VIM) part number 508875. The VIM supplies programming inputs that monitor and control such vehicle functions as lights, warning indicators and some interlock functions of the vehicle electrical system.

In the recalled vehicles, a defect in the VIM software might affect the operation of the brake lights and other electrical operations. The truck’s brake lights might illuminate even when the vehicle is not braking, for example. Additionally, the software may prevent the vehicle from raising its idle when auxiliary equipment is being used, NHTSA said.

If the brake lights illuminate while the vehicle is moving, other motorists could mistakenly believe the vehicle is stopping or slowing down. Also, if the vehicle cannot raise its idle when auxiliary equipment is being used, equipment such as aerial devices, electrical generators and rescue tools may not perform properly.

To remedy the problem, E-One dealers will update the VIM software. There will be no charge for this service. The recall begins this month.
