Hyundai’s 25-ton, 173-hp HX220L excavator recently received a variety of upgrades and enhancements designed with operators and technicians in mind. First introduced in 2015, the model is part of the HX Series that replaced the 9A Series.

Improvements Boost Productivity

Enhancements include steel side bumpers for a more robust appearance and additional protection to the upper-structure house doors and sheet metal, while improvements include new buckets with standard lifting eye and North American bucket widths of 36, 42, and 48 inches; a new seat belt warning alarm for additional safety; improved wire harness connectors for longer life; travel alarm auto reset for improved safety; and a redesigned RCV joystick for improved control and reduced operator fatigue.

Most recently, the HX220L received a significant hydraulic systems improvement with the addition of Electric Positive Flow Control for better fuel economy and performance. Hyundai said it has been able to increase cycle times by 13% and decrease fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

Operators can choose from three power modes: P (power mode) for heavy work, S (standard mode) for general work, and E (economy mode) for light work. A larger, 8-inch adjustable touchscreen monitor display includes real-time readings on items such as operation data and fuel consumption.

Additional features include 13 more inches of cab space, as well as dual steps to help operators climb into the cab and even help prevent shins from hitting the track. Fifty-inch-high upper guardrails have also been added on the left and right at the top of the machine to help minimize falls, and on top of the undercarriage, Hyundai added anti-slip pads.

Easy Procurement with Cooperative Contracting

In May 2019, Hyundai was awarded contracts for procurement of heavy, medium-duty and compact construction equipment and accessories by Sourcewell, a national cooperative representing more than 50,000 U.S. and Canadian government, education, and nonprofit organizations.

“Government organizations across the United States and Canada that use Sourcewell to save time and money in purchasing have access to the full range of Hyundai equipment,” said Stan Park, vice president, distribution and marketing.
