For many students, the cost of necessary tools and equipment can be a significant barrier to pursuing an education in technical fields. Recognizing this challenge, the Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Foundation and the Carl Sandburg College Foundation have come together to offer the Tools of the Trade success grant aimed at easing the financial burden for students enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program at Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, Illinois.
The grant is specifically designed to cover the costs of essential items such as program-required tools, tool storage, uniforms, and personal protective equipment (PPE). These grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for the 2024-25 academic year and include a complete tool kit and tool cart.
Helping Students Continue Their Education in Automotive Technology
To be eligible for the Tools of the Trade grant, applicants must be currently enrolled either part-time or full-time in Sandburg's Automotive Technology Program. The grant is intended to cover academic expenses that might otherwise prevent students from continuing their education, though it does not extend to tuition fees.
Recipients are required to maintain good academic standing, defined by Sandburg as a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a 67% completion rate for attempted credits. The awarded tools and tool cart remain the property of the Sandburg Foundation until the student graduates, at which point they become the student's permanent property.
Once awarded, the program tools and carts will be distributed on campus at the beginning of the fall semester.
The Tools of the Trade Impact and Future Prospects
The Tools of the Trade grant is now in its second year and continues to be supported by the Carl Sandburg College Foundation and the Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Foundation. The initiative has been instrumental in reducing costs and removing obstacles for students pursuing a career in automotive technology. By the end of the academic year, recipients must complete an impact survey before they can take permanent ownership of their tools and tool cart.
With a limited number of grants still available for the 2024-25 academic year, the program aims to equip the next generation of automotive technicians with the tools they need to succeed, both during their education and in their future careers.

An air impact wrench.
Hammers.
Screwdrivers
Torx bits and hex bits.
Allen wrenches.
A multimeter.
Test light.
