The City of Arlington, Texas, has awarded its fleet management, maintenance, and repair contract for all municipal vehicles to First Vehicle Services, the company announced.
The three-year, $11.6 million contract is for the city’s entire fleet of 1,154 vehicles, including sedans, off-road vehicles, construction equipment, patrol cars, firefighting apparatus, and buses.
Fleet management and maintenance was previously contracted to another company. The vehicle equivalent (VE) rate is $1,438 per VE under the new contract, down from $1,604 per VE on the previous contract. The decrease is anticipated to result in savings of between $1 million and $1.5 million over the initial three-year term of the contract, according to a staff report submitted to city council. The city can add and subtract VEs as needed, which can change the target cost.
Other changes from the previous contract include: non-target repairs will be done during normal business hours rather than after hours, savings in overtime costs; the university bus fleet will be maintained during normal business hours; Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) testing and certification is mandatory for all technicians; there will be a dedicated fire emergency vehicle technician (EVT) supervisor for fire apparatus; and there will be a roving fire EVT that travels daily to different fire stations for quick repairs.
The city chose First Vehicle Services from submissions from four companies. First Vehicle Services stated it will provide 26 technicians and management and support personnel.
