Police in Utah are investigating a collision that took place over the weekend between a Tesla Model S and a fire department mechanic truck, according to a statement from the City of South Jordan where the incident took place. At the time, the Tesla driver was using Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot feature, and was looking at her phone before she rear ended the truck at 60 mph.
The mechanic truck is owned by Unified Fire Authority (UFA), the largest fire authority in Utah. UFA serves Salt Lake and Utah Counties. At the time of the collision, the truck was stopped at a red light.
According to a report from the City of South Jordan, the technicians from Tesla recovered data from the vehicle and found that the driver did not pay attention to the road, did not keep her hands on the steering wheel, and did not use the Autopilot feature in the manner recommended by Tesla.
The driver of the Tesla Model S was transported to a hospital with a broken ankle. The driver of the UFA truck was checked with injuries related to whiplash, but was not taken to a hospital.
