The City of North Charleston, S.C., opened a new $42 million Public Works facility on Aug. 13, the city announced.

The campus, which is spread across 38 acres, houses public works functions, including fleet maintenance, engineering, street and sidewalk maintenance, stormwater maintenance and utility, solid waste disposal, and city facilities maintenance and repair.

The Public Works complex consists of a campus with sheds for equipment and storage, a refueling facility for the city’s fleet, and a greenhouse.

The city garage maintains automotive equipment, construction equipment, fire trucks, generators, and similar specialized equipment and support equipment items including weed eaters and chain saws, according to the city website.

The building is located where a municipal court annex and other city departments operated, on land transferred to the city by the U.S. Air Force. The city consolidated all its other city departments to city hall in 2009, freeing up the space for construction of the new Public Works facility.
