New York City announced that two more fleet employees have died of COVID-19.

Thomas Ward served the Fire Department (FDNY) as an auto mechanic and supervisor of mechanical equipment for more than 26 years. In his most recent assignment, Ward was the supervisor of the ambulance shop, responsible for the repair and maintenance of more than 600 ambulances and other emergency response units. He also served as a volunteer firefighter at the Massapequa Fire Department for 32 years.

He was a “gentle giant who greeted everyone with a smile” and had an “easy-going demeanor,” Keith Kerman, chief fleet officer of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), wrote in a newsletter.

Michael Geraci, auto mechanic for the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), also passed away from complications of COVID-19. DSNY continues to perform its essential services, and sanitation workers and mechanics have faced daily risks in performing their jobs.

Geraci joined DSNY in 2011. He loved motorcycles, was involved in the Mustang world, and was “personable, funny, and brought much joy and love to all who knew him,” Kerman wrote.

Two other fleet employees have died from COVID-19, including Lenin Fierro, fleet safety director for DCAS, and James Villecco, FDNY auto mechanic.
