The City of Houston appointed a new fleet management director, Victor Ayres, on June 3. Ayres had been serving as interim director after Keith Hoglund’s departure for Waste Management in May.

Ayres has worked at the City of Houston for more than 20 years in various roles, including as the General Services Department's fleet manager from 2006 to 2008. During this time, he led and developed comprehensive citywide plans and programs which addressed fleet funding levels, vehicle replacement schedules, and fleet information management systems.

Prior to this appointment, Ayres served as deputy director of the Solid Waste Department, a position he has held since 2008.

The city created the Fleet Management Department in 2011 after consolidating all fleet operations. The department has more than 350 employees and 25 maintenance facilities across the city. It provides services to 22 city departments and oversees approximately 12,000 vehicles. The department is responsible for asset management, maintenance and repairs, fueling services, vehicle acquisition and disposal, equipment specifications, alternative fuel vehicle planning and implementation, and the city-wide shared motor pool program.

“This is still a relatively young department with many opportunities to excel.  I am looking forward to working with our talented and innovative staff to ensure that our customer departments are able to meet the citizens’ needs and expectations when it comes to service delivery from the city,” Ayres said.

At the City of Houston, the fleet management director is an appointed position. Ayres was appointed by Mayor Annise Parker and confirmed by City Council.
