ANDERSON, IN – Forrest Lucas, founder and president of Lucas Oil Products, announced on March 1, 2006, his plan to invest $122 million over the next 20 years to name the new stadium under construction in downtown Indianapolis the Lucas Oil Stadium.
However, the announcement grabbed the attention of Anderson, Ind., Police Chief Frank Burrows, a huge Colts’ fan. Unhappy with gas prices and hoping to do his part to break America’s dependence on fossil fuels, Burrows was determined to switch to synthetic motor oil for police cars.
When Lucas Oil won naming rights to the new stadium, Chief Burrows decided Lucas Oil would be the synthetic oil product of choice for the department. Now he finds he’s saving the city money using the Lucas products.
For the past year, the department’s fleet of 16 patrol vehicles — all 2002 and 2006 Chevy Impalas with V-6 engines — has been using Lucas Oil. After just 12 months, the city’s analysis of fuel consumption has resulted in a positive financial impact thanks to the new product. Based on an average of 70,000 miles per year, the annual savings are just under $24,000. Despite a higher cost per quart of oil, the vehicles using Lucas synthetic oil need just one-fourth the motor oil changes as vehicles utilizing traditional motor oil.
