Ala. City Reduces Vehicle Incidents by 62%

The City of Mobile, Ala., has experienced a 62% decrease in incidents since deploying the DriveCam powered by Lytx program in 2009. It has also improved driver behavior, reduced claims and risk, and exonerated drivers.

The City of Mobile, Ala., has experienced a 62% decrease in incidents since deploying the DriveCam powered by Lytx Program in 2009, according to Lytx data.

In 2009, the City of Mobile recorded 10 incidents in its solid waste division and 16 collisions in its trash division. Since implementing the DriveCam Program, Mobile Safety Manager Gary Gamble said, "Those numbers fell to six in solid waste and four in trash in 2013 — a very significant reduction." The City also reports that compliance with its seatbelt and cell phone usage policies has also dramatically improved.

"We made a commitment to our community to operate the safest fleet possible, while also reducing costs for the City," Gamble said. "We've significantly reduced risky driving behaviors like distracted and drowsy driving, as well as following too closely, which can lead to future incidents. The DriveCam Program also allows us to protect and exonerate our drivers through the use of video."

"Vehicle collision claims costs are an ongoing concern for cities and counties with limited budgets," said Robert Donahue, director of government sales, Lytx, Inc. "In addition to injuries, damages claims, and the hard costs of accident reconstruction, there are soft costs such as the damage a city’s reputation can suffer."

DriveCam powered by Lytx improves safety by combining data and video analytics with real-time driver feedback and coaching, resulting in reductions in collision-related costs and fuel consumption. Using the patented Lytx Engine, the DriveCam Solution scores, prioritizes, and tracks the results of driving behaviors to identify improvement opportunities for increased safety. An in-vehicle device captures driving behavior, which is objectively reviewed and scored by trained professionals, then passed on to the fleet for use in coaching drivers. Fleets manage the DriveCam Program through the DriveCam onlineweb-based portal.
