LOS ANGELES - A jury has awarded $15.7 million to a San Diego man who filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles after a dump truck struck him while he was riding a motorcycle.

The accident victim is Barry Bowman, a 62-year-old retired police officer who had served 24 years with the Los Angeles Police Department. His lawyer, Michael Alder, said that the accident left Bowman with short-term memory loss and that he now requires 24-hour care, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The collision occurred two years ago. Bowman, who was working as a security guard on film shoots, was struck by a drump truck operated by Tommie Wyatt Trucking, which the city's Bureau of Street Services had hired to haul asphalt.

The city's attorneys claimed that the truck driver had finished his work day and was off-duty when the accident occurred. They also argued that the truck was traveling about 2 miles per hour at the time of the collision, but Bowman's lawyers said it was traveling 14 miles per hour, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The jury assigned Bowman about $4.7 million to cover medical costs and lost wages. The remaining $11 million was awarded for pain, suffering and emotional distress.
