Applications Open for Grant Program Equipping Students with In-Demand Propane Autogas Skills

A national grant program is helping schools train the next generation of technicians to service propane autogas vehicles.

As fleets transition to cleaner fuels, demand is growing for technicians who can service alternative fuel vehicles. The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is addressing that need through its Propane Autogas Vehicle Inspection Grant Program, which provides up to $7,500 to U.S. educational institutions to integrate propane-specific curriculum and equipment into their automotive training programs.

The grants give students hands-on experience working with propane-powered buses, trucks, and vans—skills increasingly needed as more fleets adopt propane autogas to cut emissions and costs. Participating schools receive curriculum materials, funds for equipment, and support for instructors to attend a “Train the Trainer” course. Eligible applicants must already have an automotive training program in place.

“The Propane Autogas Vehicle Inspection Grant Program gives students the chance to gain practical knowledge that prepares them for careers supporting propane autogas fleets,” said Joel Stutheit, senior manager of autogas business development at PERC. “It also helps fleet operators by creating a growing pool of qualified technicians.”

Cleaner Fuel, Lower Costs

Now in its second year, the program has supported 24 schools in 16 states, helping train hundreds of students to inspect and service propane autogas systems. More than 60,000 propane autogas vehicles are in use nationwide, serving transit agencies, delivery fleets, utilities, and emergency services.

Propane autogas produces up to 96% fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions than diesel and offers lower fuel and maintenance costs while improving air quality and uptime.

“Enhanced curricula made possible by the Propane Autogas Vehicle Inspection Grant Program have benefited both schools and students,” Stutheit said. “Schools can broaden their programs without additional student costs, while graduates gain the technical skills needed in an evolving transportation industry.”

The application window for the Propane Autogas Vehicle Inspection Grant Program remains open through December 19.
