OEMs are giving police vehicles major upgrades for model year 2025. Ford, GM, and Stellantis share which new features to look forward to.
Ford has some exciting updates for model year 2025 police vehicles. The popular Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU) has an all-new, reinvented platform and now comes standard with a hybrid powertrain.
The Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU) is currently the best-selling police vehicle in the United States and is the only pursuit-rated hybrid police utility vehicle. Its 75-mph rear-impact crash test rating earned the vehicle's pursuit-rated, pursuit-tested distinction.
The crash test standard is designed to ensure fuel and battery system integrity to protect officers in the event of a crash. The Ford PIU’s SPACE (Side Protection and Cabin Enhancement) Architecture, along with structural reinforcement, also work to protect officers on the job.
Departments can choose from three powertrain options, including the standard hybrid powertrain option. The 3.3-liter, direct-injected V6 with hybrid system (AWD) can potentially save agencies up to 838 gallons of fuel annually per vehicle.
At a price of $3.50 per gallon, that totals a savings of $17,500 over a 6-year ownership term. Considering the large number of police vehicles operating coast-to-coast, the PIU Hybrid has the potential to significantly impact efficiency across North American communities.
“By doubling-down on the hybridization of PIU, America’s best-selling police vehicle, we’re underscoring Ford’s commitment to the power of choice of efficient powertrain options for government and commercial customers, providing enhanced versatility, performance, and cost-effectiveness for first responders and law enforcement agencies," said Ford Pro Police Vehicle Marketing Manager Lindsey Bertino.
The standard hybrid powertrain also features a lithium-ion hybrid battery that can stand up to the unique idling demands of day-to-day police use.
Considering the large number of police vehicles operating coast-to-coast, the PIU Hybrid has the potential to significantly impact efficiency across North American communities.

“All of these are features that were previously add-ons but are now included on the PIU. These changes were made, in part, based on feedback from agencies,” Bertino told Government Fleet. "We listened to what customers wanted — what do they value most? Officer safety, we know in this segment, is paramount. We wanted to make sure that when we standardized content on the vehicle, we put things that mattered to an officer," she added.
The all-new 2025 Ford Expedition Special Service Vehicle is now in its second generation and includes two versions, either two or three rows of seating with durable cloth seating surfaces, vinyl floors, and an array of power points for all areas of the vehicle.
The utility vehicle also includes the new Ford Split Gate tailgate to make accessing and using the cargo area easier, as well as Police Accessory Independent Timed-Release Output to help prevent unauthorized access to stored items. It also includes a panoramic display, full connectivity and Ford Pro services, and available Dark Car mode to help occupants remain discrete during stakeouts.
The Expedition SSV powertrain is standard with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which develops 400 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque backed by a 4x4 driveline with a new two-speed transfer case with Touch on Demand and 4-Auto.
Expedition SSV has a 9,600-pound maximum towing capacity and includes Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert, and BLIS with Trailer Coverage to help with hitching, backing, and situational awareness.
“Duty is at the heart of everything our valued law enforcement customers do, and that’s a standard Expedition SSV is built to meet,” said Bertino. “We’re very proud to add another all-new vehicle to our police lineup with incredible technology like the panoramic display that departments across the country are looking for.”
The F-150 Police Responder is America’s first purpose-built, pursuit-rated pickup truck, designed to afford urban and rural departments utility in towing, hauling and off-road performance while also providing confidence at speed and when agility is needed.
It features an enhanced top speed of 120 mph automatic four-wheel-drive mode and Touch-on-Demand transfer case that constantly adjusts torque to front and rear wheels. It also offers duty-specific technology features like Police Perimeter Alert, Police Engine Idle, Dark Car Mode, the full suite of Ford Pro telematics and connected services, and Vehicle Integration System 2.0, to simplify upfitting the truck to meet department needs.
The F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle providesthe modern, always-on work-ready truck police departments need to help lower costs, drive efficiency, and accelerate customers’ sustainability goals.
It combines benefits of an electric powertrain with law enforcement-specific interior features including police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats, built-in steel intrusion plates, and available roof-mounted LED warning beacons

The all-electric Mustang Mach-E was the first all-electric vehicle to pass the Michigan State Police testing program and is currently undergoing pilot program testing with departments across the country. The testing is to evaluate the advantages in operating costs and meeting the sustainability goals of local municipalities.
Police vehicles also feature Ford Pro, a suite of products and services from Ford Motor Company that helps businesses and governments run their fleets more efficiently, reduce downtime, and reduce total cost of ownership.
The all-in-one solution has five pillars: vehicles, software, charging, service and financing. This includes already-embedded telematics devices and free access to the basic Ford Pro Telematics Essentials platform for the life of the vehicle.
This includes vehicle health insights, dealer scheduling, and maintenance and service tracking available on a user-friendly dashboard. Departments can also get more robust telematics software features with a paid subscription.
"No other company has Ford Pro. We intend to fully press that advantage,” Ford CEO Jim Farley shared during the Q2 earnings call.

GM Envolve’s roster of police SUVs and pickup trucks includes the first pursuit-rated Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV), Special Service Vehicles (SSV) and electric vehicle offerings.
“GM Envolve products and solutions are designed to meet the everchanging needs of our fleet customers to get the job done,” said Jennifer Costabile, General Director GM Envolve Marketing and Sales Enablement. “Our 25MY police vehicle lineup has several noteworthy changes and enhancements that we have built in as a result of feedback from our law enforcement customers and their needs.”
In case you missed the Spring 2024 launch, the all-new Blazer EV PPV is noteworthy as the first-ever all-electric pursuit-rated police package. The vehicle features two packages: A Police Specific interior with the center console removed, front cloth with vinyl rear seating, and heavy-duty vinyl flooring, and a civilian-style interior that includes the retail center console, cloth seats, cup holders, armrests, and carpeting.
Police-specific features for both packages include:
Dedicated 400V to 12V Power Module for aftermarket emergency equipment.
Dedicated Police-Specific Electrical Harness,whichsimplifies upfitting.
Universal Vehicle Module for CAN Readability, which can provide over 150 operating parameters and 10 switchable inputs and outputs.

“The Blazer EV PPV and SSV are built from the ground up and purposefully designed for rugged and efficient police use without sacrificing the performance they need and expect from our vehicles,” Costabile said. “With a focus on sustainability measures, many law enforcement departments are looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint.”
Designed for unmarked vehicle use, the new Blazer EV Special Services Vehicle (SSV) features a 400-volt to 12-volt power module (same as the 9C1 model) and all-electric dual-motor AWD powertrain for peak performance. It also features 22” aluminum wheels with self-sealing all-season Michelin tires and a civilian city brake package.
The Blazer EV SSV also includes interior updates for officer comfort. The retail interior comes standard with cloth seats, a retail center console, and carpeted flooring. The front seats use the same contoured 9C1 designed specifically for law enforcement duty belts.
The 2025 Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) has undergone several interior and exterior enhancements designed to improve functionality and safety.
Safety enhancements include surround vision, which provides officers a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle’s surroundings. Exterior mirror and front grille cameras enable alternative camera settings as well. The new optional safety package with 9C1 adds additional situational awareness, allowing officers to digitally see through prisoner partitions and other obstructions behind the driver’s seat.
Functionality enhancements include the return of the column shifter, which makes more efficient use of the space. The driving experience also benefits from a large 17.1” screen with a clear and accessible interface for various functions.
The 2025 Silverado PPV celebrates its third model year with power and performance. It comes standard with a 5.3L V8 engine, a 220-amp alternator, and the Z71 off-road package for officers who face diverse terrains and conditions.
Optional features include a 2” lift to improve ground clearance, and aid off-road performance. Alternatively, police fleets can opt for the 2” lift with the ZX2 package, which retained a pursuit rating.

The biggest new feature for 2025 is the Display Enabler Module (RX8), which allows officers to put laptop computers in the rear of the vehicle instead of the front passenger compartment. The Module “takes control” of the vehicle’s radio screen to display laptop computer content. This frees up cockpit space and mitigates potential interior debris in the event of an accident.
By toggling the programmable AUX buttons, the Module can switch between displaying the vehicle radio screen and up to two separate laptop computers. Officers have three options to control the laptops: the radio touchscreen, Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, or wired keyboard/mouse. When the vehicle is put into reverse, the screen automatically defaults to the backup camera view.
Laptop audio can be played on a dedicated 3.5-inch speaker, which enables vehicle alerts and entertainment to be heard independently from the laptop computer audio, or on the vehicle speaker system using the AUX media hub input.
Additional standard features on the 2025 Durango Pursuit include black steel wheels with chrome center caps, four programmable auxiliary switches, and front seats designed to accommodate officers’ duty belts.

“For the 2025MY, the tried-and-true Dodge Durango Pursuit remains our flagship vehicle, thanks to its long list of standard features developed with the help of feedback from our police agency customers,” said Jeff Kommor, SVP of sales for Stellantis. “And stay tuned, because we expect to make some more big news with both Jeep and Ram before the end of the year.”
The 2025 Durango Pursuit’s standard features include AWD and a standard 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine. Also available is an optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. Both engine types are mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission.
Additional standard features include black steel wheels with chrome center caps, four programmable auxiliary switches, and front seats designed to accommodate officers’ duty belts and enable easier access to seat belt latch points.
Other key features carried forward for 2025 are the upfit-friendly Vehicle Systems Interface Module, a heavy-duty 'BR9' brake package, standard vinyl flooring, and a tri-zone climate control system designed with K-9 units in mind. The Durango Pursuit has a top speed setting of 130 mph with the ability for customers to configure and limit for specific agency needs.
