The City of Schertz, Texas, council approved $1 million in certificates of obligation to finance two fire engine purchases, MySanAntonio.com reported.

Of the city’s five fire trucks, three have high mileage, and maintenance costs are high, the city’s fire chief said. The city is trading in the three older fire units and two additional ambulances that are slated to be sold to lower the purchase cost to $1.02 million, the newspaper reported.

The demo truck could be delivered within two months and could be placed immediately into service while the custom built unit would take about a year to build, according to council meeting documents. The demo truck would not be identical to the city’s other fire apparatus in cabin design and engine horsepower and will be used as a reserve truck after the new custom apparatus is put into service.

The city would pay on average $156,000 annually for seven years.
