New York City’s mid-December snowstorm, Gail, led to a significant increase in fleet crashes and injuries. The city saw 600% increase in crashes on the day of the storm, the New York City’s Citywide Administrative Services reported in its fleet newsletter.
Drivers are reminded to not travel during or immediately after a storm if possible, conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection when responding to a storm emergency, drive slowly and cautionsly, and use four-wheel drive if the vehicle has it.
In response to the storm, the city deployed more than 2,000 plowing units and 700 salt spreaders.

The Department of Transportation was also able to test out its new plowing and anti-icing fleet, which performed well and displayed improved visibility and traction, according to the newsletter.
