NEWARK, NJ - The Newark Police Department recently added 40 new police cars and the department's first Segway to its fleet, according to The Star-Ledger.

The new cars, Ford Crown Victoria Interceptors, are equipped with laptops to facilitate police officers' work, Police Director Garry McCarthy said. Officers will be able to access information on suspects and drivers instead of calling a dispatcher, which they currently do.

The Ford models will augment a fleet of about 400 marked and unmarked units, which have a typical lifespan of five years due to frequent use, Police Director Garry McCarthy said.

The Segway comes with tail lights, reflective labels, and a handlebar bag for police equipment. McCarthy said it will be used for crowd control during events at the arena.

Detective Hubert Henderson, a police spokesman, said the new additions were funded by money seized from criminals, according to the Ledger.
