CARSON CITY, NV - Nevada state employees can no longer send text messages while operating state-owned vehicles under a resolution approved Nov. 8 by the state Board of Examiners. The policy does not apply to public safety officers, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
The addition to the State Administrative Manual submitted to the Board for approval defines "text-based communication" to include text message, instant message, and electronic mail. This does not include reading, selecting, or entering a telephone number into a communications device to make or receive a call. This also does not apply to drivers using a navigation device.
The new policy carries no penalty. Nevada legislators are preparing bills to prohibit texting among the general public, according to the news source.
