MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has pledged to put at least 100 of the Department of Public Works' 585 cars on the auction block, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Barrett has also said he is going to cut down on the number of cars that the department's managers take home at night, stating he didn't believe they needed 75 cars for that purpose. At a news conference, Barrett said he expects that the city would raise at least $100,000 this year from selling the cars, save $250,000 in the 2006 budget on replacing cars, and save $150,000 to $200,000 a year in the future on replacement and maintenance. An audit by the city comptroller's office said that the city had too many vehicles and that many of them were not used enough. Barrett gave the department just one week to pick 100 vehicles to sell. Most of the focus is on passenger vehicles, but Barrett said the Public Works Department should look at underused heavy equipment. The mayor also said other agencies' fleets could come under scrutiny as well.
