The City of Little Rock, Ark., named Robert Kelly, automotive technician II in the Fleet Services Department, its 2013 Employee of the Year. The City chose Kelly for this honor among 2,500 full- and part-time staff members in 14 departments.
Kelly has been working with the City for nine years. He currently works at the Fleet Fire shop.
Wendell Jones, director of Fleet Services, nominated Kelly for the award, citing his “outstanding work ethic, high standard of performance, and creative problem-solving skills.” Kelly has a double Master’s ASE certifications in both automotive and medium/heavy-duty trucks, continues to take classes in automotive technology, and is studying for his emergency vehicle training (EVT). Jones said Kelly’s “out-of-the-box” thinking has helped the fleet department significantly. Kelly developed a hand-made replacement part to help prevent a recurring failure in a factory-installed vehicle part, now used on seven emergency response units. He also made corrective suggestions to extend the life of a radiator in a new fire unit, among other accomplishments.
Jones praised Kelly for his positive attitude, professionalism, and knowledge.
Kelly stated, “Everyone you meet changes your life in some way or form, and I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many people that can affect my life in a positive way.”
A selection committee, which consists of one representative from each department, chose three nominees to present to the City manager, who selected the award recipient.
