NASSAU COUNTY, NY – After eight months, Nassau County legislators eliminated the Office of Fleet Management Services, saying County Executive Thomas Suozzi did not have authority to create the agency, according to Newsday. The legislature's public safety committee voted unanimously against the office, which has been trying to consolidate the servicing and management of all county vehicles. Suozzi’s proposed 2005 budget included $13 million for the office. Committee Chairman Joseph Scannell said Suozzi made a mistake by creating the fleet management office and hiring a director without getting approval from the legislature. The county charter gives the legislature the authority to “create, organize, and abolish departments, bureaus, offices, and employments,” said Scannell. In September, Suozzi suggested moving a police precinct out of Scannell’s Baldwin district and into Roosevelt. Scannell told Newsday that issue had nothing to do with his objection to the fleet management office.
