LASD Releases Police Motorcycle Preliminary Test Results

TORRANCE, CA – The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) conducted testing of the latest police vehicle models in October, including police motorcycles. LASD conducted high-speed, braking, and acceleration tests for these vehicles.

TORRANCE, CA – The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) conducted testing of the latest police vehicle models in October, including police motorcycles. LASD conducted high-speed, braking, and acceleration tests for these vehicles. For the motorcycles, drivers tested the following vehicles:

BMW R1200 RTP
Harley Davidson Electra Glide
Harley Davidson Electra Glide Special
Honda ST1300 ABS
Victory Commander 1

High-Speed Tests

Among the motorcycles, the fastest was the Honda ST1300 ABS, with a quickest time of 1:24.33 and a slowest time of 1:31.35. The Harley Davidson Electra Glide Special had a fastest time of 1:30.19 and a slowest time of 1:38.53, and the Harley Davidson Electra Glide had a fastest time of 1:32.02 and a slowest time of 1:37.91. Among the others, the Victory Commander 1 had a fastest eight-lap time of 1:31.75 and a slowest time of 1:38.36.

For top speed, the Honda ST1300 ABS came in first place, at 107.18 mph. The BMW came in second, with a top speed of 102.93 mph. The Harley Davidson Electra Glide Special came in at a top speed of 92.61 mph, the Victory Commander 1 at 92.48 mph, the Harley Davidson Road King at 90.23 mph, and the Harley Davidson Electra Glide at 88.58 mph.

Acceleration

The Honda ST1300 ABS came in first place for the 0 to 60 mph test, at 4.41 seconds, and at an average acceleration time of 12.99 seconds for the 0 to 100 mph test. The BMW 1200RTP motorcycle came in second place in these two tests. It averaged 6.25 seconds for its 0 to 60 mph speed and 13.25 seconds for its 0 to 100 mph speed. In third place was the Harley Davidson Electra Glide, at a time of 5.87 seconds for its 0 to 60 mph time and 14.78 seconds for its overall 0 to 100 mph time. The Victory Commander 1 came in fourth, at a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.17 seconds, and a 0 to 100 mph time of 14.94 seconds.

Braking

The braking test results reported by LASD showed the Electra Glide in the lead, as it needed 136.5 feet to stop. In second place was the Victory Commander 1, at 139.7 feet. Other results included the BMW at 144.04 feet, the Honda ST1300 at 146.89 feet, and the Road King at 147.87 feet.
