The United States Postal Service expects to process and deliver more than 900 million packages and nearly 15 billion pieces of mail between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. The agency has made changes to its service, expanding its Sunday delivery operations in select high-package volume locations.
Government Fleet spoke to Kim Frum, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service, to learn more about the agency's holiday operations.
The Postal Service operates a fleet of more than 230,000 owned and leased vehicles, spanning multiple sizes. Some run on alternative fuels as well. Most recently, the agency completed the deployment of more than 20,000 commercially available Ram ProMaster vans.
In order to handle the extra volume during the holiday season, extra equipment is brought in, including package processing and sorting systems, and additional vehicles are leased as needed to supplement the existing fleet. Vehicles are maintained by internal vehicle maintenance staff.
