This weekend, Ford delivered its 1 millionth face shield for medical workers and first responders to protect them from the COVID-19 virus. This included a shipment of 30,000 face shields to New York City, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

Ford has additionally shipped over 7,500 to the New York Police Department directly since March 25.

“During difficult times, Americans pull together to solve tough problems — it’s part of who we are. New York City is on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are deeply grateful for the resources and support we are receiving from people across the country. We thank the members of the UAW and Ford for their support,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

Ford was able to make 1 million face shields in about two weeks. The process began on March 19, when the Mayo Clinic alerted Ford of the shortage of personal protective equipment and asked for help to protect first responders. Production began on March 23, and the next day the company was producing 6,500 face shields, ramping up to 225,000 face shields per day by April 5. More than 300 United Auto Workers employees are working two shifts to assemble the shields.
