The City of Detroit has purchased a new fleet of fire equipment — six fire engines and 10 ambulances — significantly decreasing the average age of its Fire Department fleet, Mayor Mike Duggan announced via Facebook.
“Eight years ago, Detroit had one of the oldest fire department fleets in the country, with an average age of more than 10 years. Fire engines were years beyond their life span and breaking down at an alarming rate,” he wrote. “We had only six ambulances for the entire city and a response time for life-threatening emergencies averaging nearly 20 minutes.”
The new purchases bring the average age of the Fire Department fleet down to 4.5 years. In 2018, the department announced it would purchase 49 new ambulances to be delivered over five years.
