GLOVERSVILLE, NY – Shirley Savage, Fourth Ward councilwoman, wants the Common Council to adopt a policy that would prohibit city employees from using city vehicles for personal errands, according to the Leader-Herald. Savage also wants the policy to require city employees to create daily logs that would document mileage, times and locations when city vehicles are in use. The policy would apply mostly for public works, police, and fire department employees. Savage stated that she has seen city vehicles used for purposes other than work-related matters, and that she has received complaints about city employees allowing other people to ride in city vehicles. Savage believes that the city can save money on fuel costs and avoid legal situations if non-city employees were hurt while riding in a city vehicle. Lance Gundersen, Second Ward councilman, said that if a policy were adopted, it would need to include a list of exceptions. It should allow police officers to stop for lunch when using a patrol vehicle, or allow exceptions for fire department officials who use department vehicles when conducting blight patrols.
