HIGHLAND PARK, IL -- The Highland Park City Council in Illinois approved a plan to convert its fleet of non-emergency vehicles to Toyota Priuses, which are fueled by a combination of gas and electricity, according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper on July 16. "This [hybrid] technology is out there, and one of the best things that government can do is to lead by example," Mayor Michael Belsky said, noting that the measure will save money and help the environment. We've had one hybrid car for the last two years, and it's saved us about $980 in fuel costs per year," said Joe Guill, the city's fleet supervisor. The non-emergency fleet, mainly used by inspectors and engineering technicians, has been made up of retired police cruisers that get 17 to 25 miles per gallon, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The city plans to add seven hybrid cars and sell seven retired police cruisers annually for the next three years.
