The City of Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) has added eight new chemical trucks to its graffiti removal fleet. The trucks are environmentally safe and use citric acid to remove markings, according to the city.

DSS has also redirected three new crews to help tackle graffiti thanks to efficiencies realized through grid refuse collection. As with grid-garbage collection, DSS uses a grid-based graffiti removal system, which enables crews to complete more work each day. 

The new graffiti trucks will be on hand as the city continues with its annual Neighborhood Service Blitz Program. The program provides a series of cleaning sweeps to neighborhoods throughout the summer and early fall, which includes services such as graffiti removal, lot cleaning, tree trimming, filling potholes, rodent abatement, and street sweeping, among others.
