The City of Anchorage, Alaska, is trying a new tactic to make icy sidewalks less hazardous, by scratching the ice on the sidewalks to create traction for walkers, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

The city is using toothy blades that it already owns and attaching them to sidewalk tractors. The technique doesn’t work for all weather conditions — it is best used when it stays below freezing when grooves are cut in, the newspaper reported.
