On May 2, the Yonkers, New York, Police Department unveiled the city's first first fully electric vehicle: a Tesla Model 3. The vehicle will be assigned to the department’s Traffic Unit, used for speed details, vehicle and traffic enforcement, and various other functions within the unit, according to Yonkers Times. The electric vehicle joins 33 hybrid police vehicles in the department's fleet.

Yonkers Police Deputy Chief Chris Sapienza said not only is the vehicle environmentally sustainable, its also faster, requires less maintenance, and has onboard computer systems that are more compatible with current police systems. The Tesla reportedly costs approximately $46,290 and has expected fuel cost projected savings between 15%-25% as compared to traditional combustion engine patrol vehicles.
