BOSTON – Wireless computers on the Boston Fire Department’s fleet are giving firefighters access to floor plans and other information about buildings throughout the city. A $1 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security made it possible to install the technology, reported The Boston Globe newspaper. The computers mount on the console of the fire trucks and provide firefighters with information about the locations of shut-off valves and exits, and the presence of hazardous and combustible materials. The system is expected to improve response times, allow firefighters to enter situations better informed, and increase safety. So far, five of the department’s engines are using the wireless technology. All 33 engines and 14 command vehicles will eventually be equipped.
