TOPEKA, KS – The state of Kansas is scheduled to spend $6.1 million on new cars, pickups, and vans after a two-year moratorium, according to the Lawrence Journal World. The state has about 7,000 passenger vehicles in addition to hundreds of trailers, heavy equipment and other types of vehicles. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius eliminated the central motor pool and sold more than 700 vehicles. Sebelius also halted new vehicle purchases except for law enforcement. The governor's office reported a total savings of about $9.8 million. Duane Goossen, the governor's budget director, said the state needs to replace about 334 vehicles. Out of the $6.1 million proposed to be spent, $726,026 will come from state tax dollars. The remaining amount will come from the federal government or from fees paid to the agencies.
