LAKEWOOD, CO — A police investigation has concluded that a number of city employees bought tires from a dealer at a government discount rate, a practice that violates state purchasing rules, according to the Rocky Mountain News. From 1999 to 2001, people working in the city fleet maintenance shop purchased “unknown quantities of tires” from the city’s vendor at a rate that is about 47 percent less than retail, according to a Lakewood police report. Individuals are not eligible for such discounts, according to the State of Colorado and Political Subdivisions Tire Contract and the policies of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. The city will not take action against the employees responsible because the purchases occurred before the city had an ethics policy in place. Also, the police did not find any criminal intent in the matter.
