On Jan. 25, the Shelby, Tenessee County Commission passed an ordinance in a 10-3 vote limiting the amount of military-grade equipment Shelby County Sheriff’s Office can receive from the federal government through the Department of Defense’s 1033 program.
The sheriff can, however, receive military equipment such as rescue vehicles in the case of a natural disaster, according to WMC Action News 5. Any other request for military equipment must be approved by the commission by a majority vote within 14 days of the request being made. It was reported the Sheriff's Office did have a mine resistant vehicle in its possession in 2017, but Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner stated in September that it was no longer a part of the department's fleet.
