SONOMA, CA — The Sonoma City Council has decided that the Sonoma Police Department should purchase a mid-size sedan instead of a hybrid car for the replacement of one of their administrative vehicles, 1997 Ford Tauruses, according to the Sonoma News. The Tauruses are used for transporting materials to and from the department, undercover operations, transportation to and from training for police staff, and driving to and from Santa Rosa. The City Council had directed the police department to consider alternative-fuel or hybrid vehicles whenever vehicles need replacement. While Sonoma County’s Fleet Manager Dave Head calculated savings of $537 per vehicle, including fuel and purchase cost, he recommended purchasing a mid-size sedan specifically designed for police patrol, suggesting that hybrid engines, transmissions, braking systems, and suspensions might put the operators at risk in police operations or emergency pursuits.
