An Idaho Sheriff's Office has filled the role for a position that would be both fleet manager and animal control officer (ACO).

From management positions to managing the job itself, see how the roles in fleet are ever evolving.

The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) hired Josh Green as the new fleet manager and animal control officer, the Office announced on Tuesday.

While the position is not new, and BCSO has always had an ACO, it was previously a part-time position, according to BCSO Chief Deputy Will Fruehling.

About 5 years ago the role became full-time and while adding in the fleet manager duties. Prior to this, BCSO deputies were responsible for the maintenance of their issued vehicles.

"As our fleet grew, we recognized that a more organized maintenance program was needed for things like oil changes, tire rotations and repairs," Fruehling stated. "This in turn helps our vehicles operate at optimal levels and increases the operational life of the vehicle."

Green, who started his new position at the end of October, will oversee a fleet of around 40-45 vehicles, which include patrol cars, snowmobiles, ATV’s, a UTV, patrol boat, and motorhome (Incident Command Vehicle).

Most of his fleet role is to coordinate maintenance but is in the process of decommissioning some of the BCSO patrol cars, which includes removing light bars, wiring for emergency lights, radars, in-car camera systems, and more.

On the animal control side he has experience with livestock and household pets and is in the process of learning animal control laws and ordinances.

Green has been in the construction trade, with additional work in landscaping where one of his duties was vehicle and small engine maintenance. He was also a paid on-call firefighter with a local Department for several years and a member of the county's Search and Rescue team.

"Josh is kind of a jack of all trades and is motivated to be a part of a team. He is a problem solver and is an all around great guy who is willing to do anything to help the team," Fruehling noted. "His experience and knowledge of maintaining vehicles and engines is a big plus and has the mechanical knowledge to maintain our fleet."
