The City of Santa Ana, Calif., was awarded a grant in the amount of $262,500 from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) to help finance three alternative-fuel projects. The funding was made possible by the MSRC’s Local Government Match Program, which offers incentives to cities and counties that undertake projects to reduce emissions from mobile sources. The projects are part of the City’s Facilities, Fleet Management & Central Stores' “green” strategic plan to create a more environmentally responsible operation over the next five years.

The three projects include development of new on-site refueling for autogas vehicles and site improvements for the refueling of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. The final project involves modifications to the existing maintenance facility to better accommodate the service and repair of alternative-fuel vehicles and equipment.

The City recently announced that it completed the installation of emission control devices on six vehicles and will purchase seven propane-powered trucks. Funding for these purchases was also provided by the MSRC.

The Facilities, Fleet Management & Central Stores division has aggressively pursued grant funding to assist in the greening of the operation. These efforts have been rewarded with funding for alternative-fuel vehicles and infrastructure, in addition to emission control devices. The division has also won various awards, including being named No. 10 in Government Fleet Magazine’s 100 Best Fleets in North America and named No. 11 of the Government Green Fleets in Northern America.

With the support of the MSRC, the City of Santa is able to implement innovative green fleet strategies that benefit the welfare of the City, its residents, and the surrounding communities. Visit the MSRC website for more information on the mission and projects of the MSRC.
