The San Francisco Fire Department's attempts to replace ambulances with more than 200,000 miles of service have fallen prey to a county budget process that has sidelined the agency's $28.1 million funding request.
The department has been dealing with mounting repair bills for the ambulances, which were added to the fleet in 1999 in some cases, reports the San Francisco Examiner.
In recent years, the county has prioritized personnel hiring over vehicle and equipment needs. Now, about 10 percent of vehicles in the SFFD fleet are at least 15 years old.
A year ago, the department added 15 engines and 15 ambulances. This year, the agency has been asked to trim its budget by 1.5 percent. The agency has requested $28.1 million for 10 trucks, 20 engines, and 35 ambulances.
Government fleet sales rose from both January and February monthly totals, which were both under 20,000.
