OAKLAND, CA -- The Port of Oakland announced a new initiative to reduce air pollution around the port, reports The Oakland Tribune newspaper. Port officials are working to address vehicle emissions and other problems in the terminal area to comply with a lawsuit settlement requiring reductions in pollution. The new program will offer grants to truckers who buy newer, cleaner-burning diesel trucks, and also outfit at least 250 trucks with diesel oxidation catalysts. Port officials elected to earmark money for retrofits and upgrades after discovering that almost half the vehicles servicing the terminals had engines of 1994 or earlier vintage.
