ISELIN, NJ - Nearly 250 police fleet managers from across the US and Canada attended the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) FMI-LEG Conference and Expo, featuring the first-ever NAFA LEG "Roadeo," according to the NAFA Fleet Focus e-mail newsletter. The Roadeo was a series of driving skills tests, demonstrations, and hands-on activities specifically for police fleet managers and law enforcement personnel. Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors all supplied vehicles, enabling attendees to get behind the wheel and test not only their driving skills, but the vehicles’ capabilities. NAFA Law Enforcement Group Chair Will Massey, CFM/CAFM, commented, “This year's inaugural LEG Roadeo took a turn from the traditional 'ride and drive' to a more competitive event which included three challenging timed courses that gave the participants an opportunity to show off their driving skills. In addition, participants were given the opportunity to drive unique vehicles with police related applications such as the Segway, American Chariot, and Hammond's ODV. A special thanks goes out to these manufacturers as well as DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and General Motors for providing their latest model police vehicles for the competitive driving courses," said Massey. The Roadeo was sponsored by Federal Signal, Whelen Engineering, Code Three, and Harley Davidson. While police fleet managers were testing their driving skills, other attendees were able to get behind the wheel of some of the newest big rigs, provided courtesy of International Truck. This first-ever truck "ride and drive" gave fleet managers the opportunity to test the capabilities of some of International’s latest models and engines, albeit in a controlled course with limited speed. "We were very pleased with the turn-out," said Bob Neitzel, medium marketing manager for International. "This was our first year 'at the dance' so there are a few things we’ve learned to do differently next year, but we’ll definitely be back next year. This was a great show for us."

Bobit Business Media surveyed 190 fleet professionals and found that while most fleets are tracking costs, fragmented systems and data gaps are keeping true TCO visibility out of reach.
