The City of Pittsburgh has increased its fleet of Public Works plows and spreaders as the city readies itself for winter operations, reports WTAE.

The city added 13 plows and spreaders over last year to increase its fleet to 146 vehicles. The city's largest territory that includes Squirrel Hill, Hazelwood into the Hill District, and New Homestead has the most snow-fighting equipment with 25 pieces. The district also has six pieces in the shop.

The price of salt has increased by 4% from a year ago to $70 a ton. Public Works will use its 13,000 tons in stock and order at least 30,000 tons to make it through the snow season, Public Works Director Mike Gable told the outlet.

The city has also upgraded its snow-plow tracking website for the public and plans to introduce a mobile app for residents.
