The Payson Police Department has switched to leasing its police fleet rather than purchasing and has received 18 new Ford Explorers, according to the Daily Herald. The department signed a five-year lease, with options every two years, after talking to other police departments and finding the lease option to be most cost effective.

Chief of Police Thomas Runyan wrote in a letter to residents that he had originally asked for $210,000 to replace five vehicles, the usual annual unit replacement count. He stated the lease program cost less than $150,000 per year for the entire fleet of 18 vehicles and necessary equipment. The old fleet consisted of vehicles from model-years 2001 to 2007.
