Oregon PD to Install In-Car Cameras in all Patrol Vehicles

The Bend, Oregon, City Council approved a contract with Axon to install fleet cameras in all of its Bend Police Department vehicles, according to KTVZ. The department will enter into a five-year contract with Axon, in an amount not to exceed $679,500, according to the city council issue summary.
The goal of the cameras is to, "support law enforcement strategies to improve public safety, reduce crime, bolster prosecution efforts, and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community," according to the issue summary. Phase one of the police camera system was launched in fiscal year 2021-2022, with the addition of body-worn cameras. Phase two, the fleet cameras, will launch in 2022-2023.
Full implementation of the program requires every officer and vehicle be equipped with a camera during a shift. All video recordings will be stored in a secure cloud location, and the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office will have the ability to view the recordings when needed.
The department's contract with Axon provides cameras and applicable licenses for each patrol vehicle, as well as necessary hardware, cloud storage, service, and installation of the cameras.
