FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA - The Orange County Sanitation District hosted a Municipal Equipment Maintenance Association (MEMA) meeting Nov. 17, which focused on fleet certification, technician training, a new brake rotor, and the CODA all-electric sedan.

The OC Sanitation District, which handles wastewater and sewer treatment for the coastal areas of Orange County, operates a fleet of 621 units, which include bicycles, a tour bus, vactors, cranes, skid and trash pumps, Taylor Dunn electric cargo and personnel carts, and generators. Chuck Forman, fleet and rebuild service manager, and Nick Arhontes, director of Facilities Support Services Department (FSSD), led a facility tour after the meeting.

CODA vice president of fleet sales, Brian Patnoe, gave a brief overview of the electric sedan, announcing that the automaker had partnered with General Electric for sale and distribution of the WattStation Wall Mount charging station. The sedan was available after the meeting for a ride-and-drive.

Eric Bearly of Government Fleet discussed the Certified Fleet Management Operation (CFMO) and the CLEANFleet Certification (CFC) for public sector fleet facilities and demonstrated Fleet Toolbox features.

John Frala, alternative fuels instructor for Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif., discussed the increasingly mathematical and engineering-related aspects of servicing battery-electric vehicles. He stressed the importance of hands-on training and up-to-date training to ensure EV technicians stay safe.

PureForge distributor Rick Crossman brought in a brake rotor for motorcycles, announcing that various fleets in the Southern California area are testing them on the police motorcycle fleets. He said the rotors produce shorter stopping distance, reduce brake dust pollution, and prolong brake life. The company will soon be testing the rotors on police sedans, starting with the Ford Crown Victoria.
