The Gage County (Neb.) Board of Supervisors has begun considering Verizon's Networkfleet telematics system as a cost-savings measure for most of the county's vehicle fleet.

The county is now considering a yearlong contract with Verizon for 60 of the county's 80 fleet vehicles. The 20 vehicles exempted under the plan have trailers, reports the Beatrice Daily Sun.

Installing the tracking modules is expected to save the county 15 percent in fuel costs by influencing the driving behavior of county workers. The county is also investigating whether it can book savings through its insurance rates with the telematics system.
