The City of East Orange, N.J., has purchased five street sweepers after deciding to bring street sweeping back in house for the first time in nearly two decades, the city reported.

The city claims that having its own sweepers will reduce costs for taxpayers — $140,000 in the first year — while producing more jobs for residents and allowing the city to control how it cleans its streets.

The five Johnson RT655 Regenerative Air Sweepers meet the latest environmental standards and are Tier 4 certified. They also make less noise and emit less emissions, the city reported.

The neighboring City of Newark has also brought street sweeping back in house and purchased eight sweepers earlier this year.
