Most Texas Criminal Justice Fleet Vehicles Won’t be Replaced

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS - Some 800 of the 2,300 vehicles in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice fleet have reached their lifecycle limits. However, with the $2.5 million available this budget year for replacements, depending on prices and models, only 30 to 40 will be replaced.

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS - Some 800 of the 2,300 vehicles in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice fleet have reached their lifecycle limits. However, with the $2.5 million available this budget year for replacements, depending on prices and models, only 30 to 40 will be replaced, according to the Austin American Statesman.

According to the news source, agency cars, buses, and large trucks stay on the fleet twice as long as the industry standard: 10 years or 200,000 miles for cars, 20 years or 600,000 miles for buses, and 1 million miles or 20 years for 18-wheelers.

Many vehicles are awaiting a possible trip to an inmate-staffed auto shop for repair or be scavenged for parts. Texas faces an estimated $18 billion budget shortfall, according to the news source.
