The state is considering implementing GPS-based telematics to save money on fuel and crack down on employees who misuse government vehicles, state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker (R-Lawton) told MLive.com.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget would launch the 120-vehicle pilot program under substitute language adopted April 16. Senate Bill 8 gained approval from the Senate Elections & Government Reform Committee, reports the Lansing State Journal.
The state maintains 9,500 on-road vehicles, including 2,000 state police vehicles that are aready equipped with tracking technology.
