The City of Hyattsville, Md., broke ground on a new Department of Public Works building earlier this month. The new facility will include four maintenance bays for mechanics to work on city vehicles. The extra space will also allow the department to take over maintenance of the city’s police cars, reports Hyattsville Life.

Public works staff often sleep in the facility when on call for emergency situations. The new building will offer more space for staff and vehicles, and will add a female locker room. It was also designed with sustainability in mind, with solar panels and cisterns to collect stormwater. The department is also looking into recycling oil to heat its maintenance bays.

The project is expected to cost $3 million, and the city will seek grants to help offset the cost.
